By providing a governed framework, IT teams are effectively turning the ent= ire company into a force multiplier for digital transformation. ###**The Stats That Matter** -=20 While the demand for custom business apps is growing **5x faster** than IT = capacity can handle,=C2=A0**80% of low-code/no-code users** are now located= outside formal IT departments, per Gartner.=C2=A0 -=20 Organizations that have launched formal citizen development programs report= that **71% of their custom apps** are now delivered at least=C2=A0**50% fa= ster** than traditional development methods, per Forrester. For an SMB especially, every hour your senior admin spends fixing a spreads= heet or manually syncing data is an hour stolen from high-value security or= infrastructure work. Hence the growing embrace of **governance** **over** **gatekeeping**. It accumulates slowly, across= dozens of services, until you realize you're bleeding money. Rippling CTO Albert Strasheim learned this firsthand at Segment, where a 50= 0-person engineering team had morphed into "10-ish 50-person startups, each= charging ahead" without coordinated oversight. The AWS and Google Cloud bi= lls were spiraling, and gross margins were heading in the wrong direction. As it turned out, the fix was instituting a new daily ritual. "You really need the daily dashboard or the daily email or the daily report= in Slack," Strasheim says. His team built a command center view that every= stakeholder checked each morning, coffee in hand, looking for anomalies. "It takes a while for a team to build muscles around this kind of optimizat= ion," he explains. "Getting everybody into this rhythm of 'we're going to w= ake up, grab our coffee, look at the dashboard, drill down and ask question= s,' that takes time to establish." The result: infrastructure costs dropped 30% while traffic grew 25%. But th= e discipline required more than just visibility. "You have to put the daily standup on the calendar. You have to have the me= eting. You have to be annoying if everybody doesn't show up," Strasheim say= s bluntly. This isn't optional coordination: it's building organizational m= uscle memory around something most teams would rather ignore. The breakthrough came when they found their "cost reduction champions," eng= ineers who were naturally wired for frugality. "Some people really do love = saving money. It's the kind of mission they really get excited about," he n= otes. But even champions need context. **Here's where a lot of leaders fumble**: they show engineers a spreadsheet= of dollar amounts and tell them to make the numbers go down. Strasheim did= the opposite. He explained gross margins. He walked through how infrastruc= ture efficiency impacts company valuation and the value of employee shares.= "The average software engineer doesn't always know what gross margin is ex= actly," he admits. "Once you help the team understand the whole framework a= round making these decisions, things flow a lot better." The lesson stuck with him. When it comes to infrastructur= e costs, a problem doesn't usually announce itself all at once in a single,= shocking bill. It accumulates slowly, across dozens of services, until you= realize you're bleeding money.
