Electricity = went out in more than 600,000 U.S. homes and businesses during the blizzard= that pummeled the Northeast with two feet of snow. Massachusetts suffered = the worst of the blackout, with nearly 300,000 customers still disconnected= as of Monday night. New Jersey and Delaware trailed behind with more than = 50,000 households each. In a show of the bicoastal nature of America=E2=80= =99s grid fragility, intense winds in California also knocked out power lin= es and plunged tens of thousands more homes into darkness. Heavy snows put = travel bans in effect across five states, but temperatures remained just ab= ove freezing in broad swaths of the country=E2=80=99s most densely populate= d region.

 

Winter Storm Fern, the Arctic weather that hi= t the Northeast at the end of last month, took out power for more than 1 mi= llion U.S. households, as I rep= orted at the time. That=E2=80=99s due in part to the frigid air. As Heatmap= =E2=80=99s Jeva Lange and Matthew Zeitlin wrote recently: =E2=80=9CPut = simply, cold temperatures stress the grid. That=E2=80=99s because cold can = affect the performance of electricity generators as well as the distributio= n and production of natural gas, the most commonly used grid fuel. And the = longer the grid has to operate under these difficult conditions, the more f= ragile it gets. And this is all happening while demand for electricity and = natural gas is rising.=E2=80=9D

2. The Supreme Court agrees to hear Exxon Mobil=E2=80=99= s bid to kill Colorado climate lawsuit

The Sup= reme Court added just one new case to its oral argument docket upon returni= ng Monday from its winter recess. The nation=E2=80=99s highest court has ag= reed to review a ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court in a case in which th= e oil and gas industry challenged Boulder County=E2=80=99s legal right to s= ue fossil fuel producers for damages from the effects of climate change und= er state law on the grounds that the companies knowingly destabilized the p= lanet=E2=80=99s weather systems. In a lawsuit backed by Exxon Mobil, the Ca= nadian fuel refiner Suncor Energy argued that the issues Boulder=E2=80=99s = county commission cited in its suit fall under the federal government=E2=80= =99s jurisdiction, thereby invalidating the basis for the litigation. While= Colorado=E2=80=99s highest court said it aimed to =E2=80=9Cexpress no opin= ion on the ultimate viability of the merits of=E2=80=9D Boulder=E2=80=99s c= laims when it rejected oil companies=E2=80=99 arg= ument in 2023, the justices wrote that they believed the industry case boil= ed down to an argument that =E2=80=9Ca vague federal interest over intersta= te pollution, climate change, and energy policy must preempt Boulder=E2=80= =99s claims.=E2=80=9D 

 

Heatmap=E2=80=99s Emily Pontecorvo laid out = the stakes like this: =E2=80=9CThe case is arriving at the nation=E2=80=99s= highest court in a particularly fraught moment for climate regulation. The= Supreme Court ruled back in 2007 that the EPA had authority to regulate gr= eenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act, preventing states from creating a p= atchwork of their own emissions rules.=E2=80=9D The case has come before th= e Supreme Court five times already, according to SCOTUSblog. 

3. NRDC launch= es a new effort focused on geoengineering governance

Once derided as a =E2=80=9Cfalse solution=E2= =80=9D that posed grave risks across human endeavors =E2=80=94 even to the = scientific process itself =E2=80=94 environmental advocates have begun quietly to embrace the need at least study what techn= ologies to artificially cool the planet might do now that a private geoengi= neering industry is rapidly emerging. (To brush up, re-read all the co= ntext my colleague Robinson Meyer wove into his scoop last year on a leadi= ng geoengineering startup raising its first major financing round.) Now the= Natural Resources Defense Council is officially taking geoengineering seri= ously. The green group launched a new project Tuesday morning to collate re= search on solar radiation management, the controversial suite of technologi= es that largely involve spraying reflective aerosols into the atmosphere to= reflect the sun=E2=80=99s energy back into space.

 

Dubbed the Solar Geoengineering Research Gove= rnment Platform, the project =E2=80=9Cwill provide shared, voluntary tools = that help research institutions demonstrate how decisions are made, risks a= re managed, and public concerns are addressed.=E2=80=9D The NRDC said labor= atory and university partners would be unveiled in upcoming announcements. = =E2=80=9CSolar geoengineering research is advancing faster than governance = systems can keep pace,=E2=80=9D Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geo= engineering executive director Shuchi Talati, whose geoengineering-focused = nonprofit is part of the NR= DC=E2=80=99s new effort, said in a statement. =E2=80=9CThe goal is to caref= ully co-develop thoughtful, practical governance tools before research expa= nsion narrows public choice.=E2=80=9D

4. Clean energy finance split in two last year = ;

Despite a storm of tariffs and seachanges in = federal policy, clean energy finance in 2025 =E2=80=9Cproved less fragile t= han the year=E2=80=99s headlines suggested.=E2=80=9D That=E2=80=99s the con= clusion of a new year-end report this morning by Crux Climate, the low-carb= on fintech startup. (Read Matthew Zeitlin=E2=80=99s write up here for more.) =E2=80= =9CAI investment, data center development, delayed interconnection, and ene= rgy affordability reinforced the underlying investment case in 2025 for pro= jects that could deliver power and reliability quickly and predictably,=E2= =80=9D the report found. =E2=80=9CIn this environment, clean energy and cap= ital markets were remarkably resilient.=E2=80=9D Investors gave out more ca= pital than ever, but the market split. One on side, you had smaller develop= ers, manufacturers, and biofuels companies that saw overall declining inves= tment. On the other, you had soaring power investment. 

 

The green steel startup Boston Metal, meanwhi= le, is cutting jobs after suffering what Canary Media called =E2=80=9Ca major setback.=E2= =80=9D The company said it had experienced an =E2=80=9Cunforeseen critical = equipment failure=E2=80=9D at its manufacturing plant in Brazil. While the = incident was =E2=80=9Cfully contained, with no injuries or environmental im= pact,=E2=80=9D the equipment damage prevented the startup from hitting an o= perational milestone needed to unlock a pending financial deal. As a result= , =E2=80=9Cwe lost access to committed capital essential to supporting our = operations in both Brazil and the U.S.=E2=80=9D Boston Metal is now laying = off 71 employees in the U.S., amounting to nearly a quarter of its global w= orkforce. 

5. Amazon inve= sts $12 billion in Louisiana data centers

Amazon plans to pump $12 billion into new dat= a center campuses in Louisiana, the company announce= d Monday. The push will create 540 full-time data center jobs and the t= ech giant will invest =E2=80=9Cup to $400 million in local water infrastruc= ture=E2=80=9D for the facilities. In a press release, the company pledged t= o pay for its own energy and utility infrastructure, and provide a $250,000= community fund to help support science education. 

 

At least 25 data centers were abandoned last = year following local opposition, according to a Heatmap Pro review that Rob wro= te about last month. Data center fights, our colleague Jael Holzman wrote in November, are =E2=80=9Cswallowing American politics.=E2=80=9D

Leave it to = France to punch above its weight in nuclear energy. Last week, the WEST tokamak reactor at the French Commission = of Atomic and Alternative Energies=E2=80=99 Cadarache laboratory broke a re= cord in fusion energy. The reactor held a hot plasma for 1,3= 37 seconds, slightly over 22 minutes. That beat the previous record set by = a Chinese fusion facility weeks earlier by 25%. =E2=80=9CWEST has = achieved a new key technological milestone,=E2=80=9D Anne-Isabelle Etienvre= , the commission=E2=80=99s director of fundamental research, said in a statement. =E2=80=9CExperiments will continue with increas= ed power. This excellent result allows both WEST and the French community t= o lead the way for the future=E2=80=9D large-scale experiments at the ITER = international fusion research project.
