Not because they stopped working, but because = many of them became important in a phase when models still needed more help= . Now that models are getting stronger, and AI is moving from isolated tech= niques toward systems, the old playbook is starting to matter less too. Wha= t should companies focus on building if those old defaults are no longer as= central? And what kinds of product decisions are more likely to age well a= s models keep improving? That=E2=80=99s really what this issue is about. 1-= Prompt engineering: from magic to basic Good prompts still matter. But in = most serious systems, they are rarely the thing that determines whether the= product works. What matters more is everything around them: how context is= assembled, what tools are available, how memory is handled, and how output= s are checked. Microsoft=E2=80=99s own documentation makes the shift visibl= e: prompt engineering can improve performance, but responses still need val= idation, and success in one prompt setup does not guarantee broader reliabi= lity. The prompt is still there. It=E2=80=99s just no longer carrying the w= hole product on its back. 2- RAG: still useful, but not the center anymore = This is probably one of the clearest examples. Two years ago, if a company = wanted AI to work with internal knowledge, the answer was almost automatic:= build a RAG pipeline. And to be fair, that made sense. Models had smaller = context windows, so retrieval had to do much more heavy lifting. That=E2=80= =99s less true now. Retrieval still matters. Grounding still matters. But R= AG no longer automatically sits at the center of the system. In many cases,= it is becoming one part of a broader context strategy rather than the stra= tegy itself. So the shift is not that RAG disappeared. It=E2=80=99s that na= ive RAG is losing its status as the universal solution. 3- Fine-tuning: bec= oming a narrower choice It increasingly feels like a more specific and more= expensive move, not the default one. In a lot of cases, stronger base mode= ls, better prompting, longer context, and better orchestration have reduced= the need to retrain a model just to make it usable. The tradeoff has becom= e clearer: fine-tuning can still be powerful, but it is a narrower and more= expensive choice than many people assumed a year or two ago. The center of= effort is shifting from changing the model itself to designing the system = around it. A visual tool for high-bandwidth collaboration with coding agent= s. Today, you describe what you want in a terminal, the agent writes files = to disk, and you open them somewhere else to see what happened. It=E2=80=99= s slow, disconnected, and shallow, like giving renovation instructions thro= ugh text messages. But the gap between prototyping= and building something durable has become much more obvious. Once teams ru= n into integration issues, edge cases, maintainability, or production const= raints, visual workflows often stop feeling like the full answer. At the sa= me time, stronger code generation is changing the equation again. The resul= t is not that no-code goes away, but that its role looks smaller and more s= ituational than the early narrative suggested. So what actually matters mor= e now? Product principles that make more sense now. 1. Don=E2=80=99t build = around temporary model limitations If your product structure mainly exists = to compensate for what models cannot do today, it may age faster than expec= ted. Some workarounds are necessary. But they should stay workarounds =E2= =80=94 not become the foundation of the product. 2. Design for model evolut= ion AI products should be able to absorb better models, better tools, and n= ew capabilities over time. The more tightly a product is tied to one moment= in the model curve, the faster it can lose relevance. The stronger approac= h is to build systems that improve as the model layer improves. 3. Own the = last mile The most durable value is often not in raw model performance, but= in the parts around it: workflow fit, trust, usability, domain context, an= d clear human oversight. These are the layers that usually matter most in r= eal adoption, and they are much harder to commoditize than model access alo= ne. 4. Make proprietary data usable In many enterprise settings, the real b= ottleneck is not model intelligence. It is whether internal data can actual= ly be accessed, structured, and used reliably.
