On Saturday, President Donald Trump gave the = Iran government until Monday night to fully open the Strait of Hormuz to oi= l and gas tankers or face an assault on the country=E2=80=99s power plants.= If the waterway didn=E2=80=99t return to normal operation =E2=80=9Cwithin = 48 hours from this exact point in time, the United States of America will h= it and obliterate their various power plants, starting with the biggest one= first,=E2=80=9D he wrote in a post on Truth Social. Iran=E2=80=99s largest pow= er station is the Bushehr nuclear plant plant. Russia built Iran=E2=80=99s = debut atomic power station, opening the single-reactor station in 2011. Ano= ther two reactors are under construction. Last Friday, I reported here that a projectile had landed roug= hly three football fields away from the Bushehr plant. The International At= omic Energy Agency warned that =E2=80=9Cany attack at or near nuclear power= plants violates the seven indispensable pillars related to ensuring nuclea= r safety and security during an armed conflict and should never take place.= =E2=80=9D The incident mirrors concerns in recent years over the fate of Eu= rope=E2=80=99s largest atomic power plant, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear station= , which went into standby mode in 2022 after becoming the scene of fierce f= ighting once Russian troops seized control of the Ukrainian facility. The world=E2=80=99s f= irst BWRX-300 is under construction at the Darlington plant in Ontario, Can= ada. A second unit is underway at the Tennessee Valley Authority=E2=80=99s = Clinch River site, with $400 million from the Department of Energy, as I reported for Heatmap last = year. There=E2=80=99s still debate over whether the U.S. can build enough o= f the 300-megawatt units to gain a price advantage through repetition over = the traditional approach to building nuclear power stations, which is to co= nstruct reactors in larger sizes. More orders for the same reactor lays the= groundwork for making that possible. 

 

The BWRX-300 has long been seen as a promisin= g new reactor model because it=E2=80=99s based on old-school boiling water = reactor designs and can tap into existing supply chains. But X-energy, the = Amazon-backed next-generation nuclear developer, is instead aiming to build= 80-megawatt reactors cooled with helium. On Friday, X-energy said it was in talks with the power compan= y Talen Energy to build up to a gigawatt of reactors as the nuclear startup= prepares to go public on th= e stock market. Just one so-called high temperature gas cooled reactor= is in commercial operation today, in China. But the technology promises mo= re efficient generation of heat that could also be used for industrial deca= rbonization. Amazon, which took an equity stake in X-energy in 2024, is alr= eady financing construction of the first power plant to use the reactors in= Washington. 

3. Emerald AI launches flexible-demand data centers with= Nvidia

Emerald AI, a startup whose softwar= e serves as a =E2=80=9Ccloud scheduler for power=E2=80=9D to align peak ele= ctricity usage at data centers with the periods when the grid is least stre= ssed, announced a new deal with semiconductor giant Nvidia to work on a new= class of so-called =E2=80=9CAI factories=E2=80=9D that =E2=80=9Cconnect&nb= sp; to the gird faster, generate valuable AI tokens and intelligence, = and operate as flexible energy assets that can support the grid,=E2=80=9D a= ccording to a press release. To speed up deployment, the data centers are d= esigned to use =E2=80=9Cco-located energy generation and storage as bridge = power for hybrid AI factories, then later harness these resources to flexib= ly supply the grid, accelerate AI factory interconnection, and support the = broader power system.=E2=80=9D In a statement, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said= the partnership would help =E2=80=9Cenable a future for AI where performan= ce, efficiency, and grid responsiveness can be tapped into immediately.=E2= =80=9D Likewise, Emerald AI CEO Varun Sivaram said data centers =E2=80=94 d= espite mounting opposition that Heatmap=E2=80=99s Jael Holzman recently compare= d to the Occupy Wall Street movement =E2=80=94 =E2=80=9Care too valuabl= e to be treated as either passive loads or permanent islands.=E2=80=9D = ;

4. Tesla = sources $2.9 billion of solar manufacturing equipment from China

Elon Mu= sk=E2=80=99s eyebrow-raising promise to more than double the United States= =E2=80=99 solar manufacturing capacity is looking more serious. On Friday, = Reuters reported that Tes= la is looking to buy $2.9 billion of equipment for manufacturing solar pane= ls and cells from Chinese suppliers, including Suzhou Maxwell Technologies.= The billionaire executive said in January that Tesla could meet all the ri= sing electricity demand in the U.S. with solar and promised to deploy 100 g= igawatts of =E2=80=9Csolar manufacturing from raw materials on American soi= l before the end of 2028.=E2=80=9D As of the start of this year, the U.S. h= as about 65.5 gigawatts of solar manufacturing capacity, according to data from the Solar Energy I= ndustries Association. When Musk made his announcement, seasoned solar anal= ysts told me it was difficult to see how such a lofty goal pans out financi= ally when imported panels remain as cheap as they are. But MAGA influencers= , including White House adviser Stephen Miller=E2=80=99s podcaster wife Kat= ie Miller, have recently become full-throated advocates of expanding solar = capacity in the U.S., as I prev= iously reported. 

 

One of Tesla=E2=80=99s troubled competitors i= n the electric vehicle market, meanwhile, is catching a break from the Trum= p administration. On Sunday, TechCrunch reported that the Securities = and Exchange Commission had closed its investigation into EV startup Farada= y Future, despite the agency=E2=80=99s career staff recommending legal acti= on last year. The dismissal of the case comes amid a historic drop in enfor= cement actions by the SEC, which the publication said had only initiated fo= ur cases against publicly traded companies in its 2025 fiscal year. The pro= be into Faraday Future began four years ago, when the SEC opened an investi= gation into whether the company made =E2=80=9Cfalse and misleading statemen= ts=E2=80=9D when it went public in a 2021 merger with a special purpose acq= uisition company, or SPAC, a process that allows a company to forgo much of= the due diligence that normally accompanies an initial public offering. Fa= raday Future founder and co-CEO YT Jia called the dismissal =E2=80=9Ca majo= r milestone=E2=80=9D for the company. =E2=80=9CIt marks a true turning poin= t,=E2=80=9D he said in a statement confirming the end of the probe. = =E2=80=9CWe can now put all our energy into strategy execution.=E2=80=9D&nb= sp;

5. Autopsy on Iberia=E2=80=99s big 2025 blackout: = =E2=80=98The issue is not about renewables=E2=80=99

Shortly after noon last April 28, nearly all = of Iberia lost power in what European grid operators called a =E2=80=9Cfirs= t of its kind=E2=80=9D incident that left 60 million people without electri= city. The blackout triggered a backlash to Spain=E2=80=99s rapid buildout o= f solar panels and its plans to stick to one of the world=E2=80=99s only re= maining nuclear phaseout policies at a time when countries that shut down r= eactors are looking to turn them back on. In a final autopsy on the outage that ENTSO-E published last week, the Euro= pean grid operator group concluded that solar and wind were not the main is= sue behind the voltage fluctuations that overwhelmed the Spanish grid and c= aused regionwide outages from the French border to Portugal. Damian Cortina= s, the chair of ENTSO-E=E2=80=99s board, told the Fin= ancial Times, =E2=80=9C= the issue is not about renewables,=E2=80=9D and lauded Spain for its =E2=80= =9Cpioneer=E2=80=9D approach to the energy transition, noting that =E2=80= =9Cwe believe that they are encountering things that everyone else could en= counter at somepoint.=E2=80=9D The takeaway from the incident is that =E2= =80=9Cfrom now on,=E2=80=9D Cortinas said, =E2=80=9Cevery kind of generatio= n,=E2=80=9D not just renewables, should have =E2=80=9Cvoltage control capab= ilities.=E2=80=9D 

 

Critics of the report argued that its conclus= ions assumed that the only potential future grid involved a lot of intermit= tent renewables and sought to =E2=80=9Cexonerate=E2=80=9D Spain=E2=80=99= s pro-solar government. On X, an engineer at the Spanish grid operator cried fo= ul over the report, stating he and his colleagues felt =E2=80=9Cpressur= e from the government=E2=80=9D to lean too heavily on solar power and promo= te a =E2=80=9Creckless mix=E2=80=9D at the time of the blackout. When Dan J= orgensen, the European Union=E2=80=99s energy commissioner, highlighted the= =E2=80=9Cnew challenges=E2=80=9D in the report, Bloomberg columni= st Javier Blas responded on= X to call out what appeared to be deliberate vagueness: =E2=80=9CNo kiddin= g!!! And what are those new challenges =E2=80=94 and where do they originat= e?=E2=80=9D

In Washington, the newly-inaugurated Trump ad= ministration spent much of 2025 hacking away at federal policies supporting= the buildout of wind and solar power. Across the country, however, the U.S. generated a record 17% of its electricity from the two renewables= , with wind producing the larger portion. Between 2024 and 2025, w= ind power=E2=80=99s output increased by 3%, according to analysis by the Energy Information Adminis= tration. But solar boomed, with utility-scale projects soaring 35% in 2025 = from the previous year.
