1. Trump renews his= threats on Iran=E2=80=99s energy infrastructure

President Donald Trump=E2=80=99s on-again, of= f-again threat to attack critical energy infrastructure in Iran that could = take years to recover is back on as of Monday. In a post on his Truth Soci= al network, the president said his administration was =E2=80=9Cin serio= us discussions=E2=80=9D with a new =E2=80=9Cmore reasonable=E2=80=9D regime= to end the war, and that =E2=80=9Cgreat progress has been made.=E2=80=9D B= ut if Tehran didn=E2=80=99t reopen the Strait of Hormuz =E2=80=9Cimmediatel= y,=E2=80=9D Trump said the U.S. would =E2=80=9Cconclude our lovely =E2=80= =98stay=E2=80=99 in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all=E2= =80=9D power plants, drilling sites, and oil export facilities on Kharg Isl= and. He said the U.S. may even target =E2=80=9Call=E2=80=9D Iran=E2=80=99s = desalination plants, =E2=80=9Cwhich we have purposefully not yet =E2=80=98t= ouched.=E2=80=99=E2=80=9D Attacking =E2=80=9Call=E2=80=9D electric generati= ng stations would seemingly include the Bushehr nuclear plant. The situatio= n at Iran=E2=80=99s first and only atomic power plant, built and currently = being expanded by the Russians, is deteriorating. Russia=E2=80=99s Foreign = Ministry on Saturday told Reuters the U.S.-Israeli = strikes that keep landing near the single-reactor facility merit =E2=80=9Cu= nequivocal and firm condemnation.=E2=80=9D The Kremlin, as I wrote last month, is currently working o= n annexing Europe=E2=80=99s largest nuclear plant, which its troops occupie= d shortly after the invasion of Ukraine began. 

 

Meanwhile, at home, the Trump administration = is delaying at least 30 wind farms =E2=80=94 with a combined capacity to ge= nerate as much as 7.5 gigawatts of power =E2=80=94 as the military sits on&= nbsp;reviews that Axios said were =E2=80= =9Conce considered routine.=E2=80=9D Gasoline prices also crept past $4 per= gallon, according to AAA= , up from just below $3 before the war began a little over a month ago.

2. Holtec prep= ares to restart Palisades reactor and begin work on building SMRs<= /p>

Holtec = International is about to complete its transition from the nuclear industry= 's undertaker =E2=80=94 a manufacturer of casks to store radioactive waste = and a decommissioner of defunct power stations =E2=80=94 to the midwife of = its rebirth. The company said Monday that it=E2=80=99s completed one of the= last major steps in its process to bring the single reactor at the Palisad= es nuclear plant in Michigan that Holtec originally bought to decommission = back online. The unit we= nt offline in 2022, right when Holtec purchased the plant. Before significa= nt demolition took place, the company struck a deal with the Department of = Energy to finance the restoration of the facility instead. But that require= d significant renovations that the previous owner declined to perform. The = latest step was =E2=80=9Cpassivation,=E2=80=9D a chemical process that remo= ves surface iron and contaminants from stainless steel to keep it from corr= oding. To perform the process, the team at Palisades brought the reactor to= its normal operating temperature and pressure for the first time since its= permanent shutdown four years ago. The work restored the system=E2=80=99s = protective surfaces following what Holtec called =E2=80=9Cextensive mainten= ance, inspection, and component upgrades completed over the past two years.= =E2=80=9D With that work complete, Holtec said in a press release that its system =E2=80=9Cwill now be coo= led and prepared for additional testing, equipment upgrades, and preparatio= ns for fuel loading.=E2=80=9D At the same time, the company said it will no= w begin laying the groundwork to expand the facility with a pair of its in-= house 300-megawatt small modular reactor, which I re= ported on for Heatmap in December. 

 

Once Holtec builds its first SMR-300s in Mich= igan, the company said last year it plans to build a hub in Utah to train worke= rs on how to construct and operate more of the reactors throughout the regi= on. But Utah Governor Spencer Cox wants more than just reactors. On Friday,= the Republican held a press c= onference announcing the state=E2=80=99s bid to host one of the Departm= ent of Energy=E2=80=99s proposed nuclear campuses that the agency said in i= ts request for information should =E2=80=9Csupport activities across the fu= ll nuclear fuel life cycle, including fuel fabrication, enrichment, reproce= ssing used fuel, and disposition of waste.=E2=80=9D The federal deadline to= apply to host a campus is tomorrow.

3. Italy postpones its coal phaseout by 12 years

Italy depends on natural gas for 40% of elect= ricity and heating, but relies on imports for nearly all that fuel. While t= he country managed to survive the 2022 energy shock that followed Russia=E2= =80=99s invasion of Ukraine, the government of Giorgia Meloni isn=E2=80=99t= taking any chances on losing access to its roughly half a dozen coal-fired= power stations. A new bill debated Monday in the parliament would allow co= al plants to keep operating until 2038, 13 years beyond the deadline set by= the National Energy and Climate Plan, which called for a December 2025 shu= tdown. =E2=80=9CAll energy sources, at least in the immediate future, must = be used to their fullest extent,=E2=80=9D Tommaso Foti, the minister for Eu= ropean affairs and the so-called national recovery and resilience plan, tol= d = L=E2=80=99Unione Sarda, the oldest newspaper in Sardinia, whic= h is home to two of Italy=E2=80=99s remaining coal plants. 

 

That=E2=80=99s not to say green energy is get= ting the boot. Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that the Meloni government had held ta= lks with France and South Korea about building a nuclear power plant in Ita= ly for the first time since the country phased out atomic energy 40 years a= go. On Monday, the European Commission approved a roughly $6.9 billion aid = package to support production of 200,000 metric tons per year of green hydr= ogen, according to Renewab= les Now.

4. Canada looks to save a copper smelter that threatened to close o= ver regulations

Months after Glencore warned it may= close Canada=E2=80=99s only and largest copper smelter over stricter pollu= tion rules, the governments in Ottawa and the province of Quebec are racing= to make a deal to keep the plant open. The Swiss miner and commodities tra= der paused plans to invest $718 million in its Quebec copper operations las= t month after talks with the province stalled over arsenic emission limits.= Medical data indicates that residents living near the Rouyn-Noranda plant = =E2=80=9Chave elevated rates of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and = a class-action lawsuit over the smelter-related harm was certified last yea= r,=E2=80=9D according to Mining.com. Queb= ec proposed giving the company more time to meet stricter emissions targets= , and discussed potentially delaying a new cap of 15 nanograms per cubic me= ter by years. The federal government in Ottawa, meanwhile, said it would co= nsider a request for $108 million in aid to finance pollution-control upgra= des. Copper demand worldwide is soaring, and =E2=80=94 as I wrote last week =E2=80=94 = the next big mine expected to open in the U.S. expects to ship its ore abro= ad for smelting. 

 

The move comes as Prime Minister Mark Carney = looks to ease climate rules on its biggest fossil fuel-producing province. = On Monday, Carbon Heral= d reported that the federal government had struck a deal with Albe= rta to roll back several planned climate measures, including a proposed emi= ssions cap on the oil and gas sector. In exchange, Alberta committed to bee= fing up its carbon pricing scheme and supporting large-scale carbon capture= and storage development.

5. Chinese EVs are increasingly profitable=

We know they=E2=80=99re cheap. We know they h= ave all kinds of glitzy hi-tech features. And we know they=E2=80=99re takin= g the global automotive market by storm. Now we also know that Chinese elec= tric vehicles are profitable. So far this year, three Chinese automakers = =E2=80=94 Stellantis-backed Leapmotor, Nio, and Xpeng =E2=80=94 posted thei= r first annual or quarterly profits, joining BYD, Xiaomi, and Li Auto in wh= at InsideEVs called =E2=80=9Ca growing roste= r of Chinese makers of plug-in vehicles=E2=80=9D that =E2=80=9Care no longe= r in the red.=E2=80=9D It=E2=80=99s a signal, the publication suggested, = =E2=80=9Cof the global automotive power balance shifting East, where Chines= e EV makers are maturing quickly while battling brutal competition and pric= e wars on their home turf.=E2=80=9D Chinese automakers are racing to open t= heir first dealerships in Canada as Ottawa eases tariffs in response to the= Trump administration=E2=80=99s aggression. THE KICKER

The deadly heat dome that formed over the Pac= ific Northwest in 2021 may have actually left some plants and animals bette= r off. Emphasis on some. In a study of about 50 species, r= esearchers across Canada  found that more than three quarters were neg= atively affected by the heat dome, while 25% saw a positive outcome. =E2=80=9CDuring the heat dome in the places where it was cool, suddenly = we have this warm air come in, and it's like putting the plants in a greenh= ouse for a couple of weeks, and so it boosted their productivity,=E2=80=9D = Sean Michaletz, an associate professor at the University of British Columbi= a=E2=80=99s department of botany, told Canada=E2=80=99s National Observer.
