With advances in acquisition, processing, and interpretation, m= odern seismic can produce highly detailed images of the subsurface. Yet, de= spite having =E2=80=9Cgood seismic,=E2=80=9D companies still make poor dril= ling decisions that lead to dry wells or suboptimal production. This raises= a critical question: if the data is good, where does the problem lie? The = answer is rarely in the seismic itself. More often, the issue lies in how t= he data is interpreted, integrated, and ultimately used in decision-making.= 1. Seismic Is Not the Subsurface One of the most common misconceptions is = treating seismic as a direct representation of geology. In reality, seismic= is a response to contrasts in acoustic impedance=E2=80=94not a direct imag= e of rock properties. A clean seismic section may look convincing, but it d= oes not guarantee geological accuracy. Features like bright spots, flat spo= ts, or amplitude anomalies can be misleading if taken at face value. Withou= t proper calibration using well data, seismic interpretation becomes a high= -risk exercise. The data may be =E2=80=9Cgood,=E2=80=9D but the conclusions= drawn from it may not be. 2. Overconfidence in Amplitude Anomalies Amplitu= de Versus Offset (AVO) and other seismic attributes are often used as indic= ators of hydrocarbons. While these techniques are powerful, they are not fo= olproof. False positives are common. Lithology changes, tuning effects, or = even noise can produce anomalies that resemble hydrocarbon signatures. Over= -reliance on these indicators=E2=80=94especially without cross-validation= =E2=80=94can lead to drilling prospects that look promising on seismic but = fail in reality. 3. Poor Integration with Other Disciplines Seismic interpr= etation does not exist in isolation. It must be integrated with geology, pe= trophysics, reservoir engineering, and basin modeling. A structurally valid= trap on seismic may lack a working petroleum system. For example: No effec= tive source rock Poor migration pathways Inadequate seal Ignoring these ele= ments leads to decisions based solely on structure, not on a complete under= standing of the system. 4. Resolution Limitations Even the best seismic dat= a has resolution limits. Thin beds, subtle stratigraphic features, and smal= l-scale heterogeneities may not be visible. This becomes critical in: Strat= igraphic traps Tight reservoirs Thin pay zones A prospect may appear contin= uous and well-defined on seismic, but in reality, it could be highly discon= tinuous or below resolution. Drilling decisions based on such interpretatio= ns can easily miss the target. 5. Cognitive Bias in Interpretation Human fa= ctors play a major role in seismic interpretation. Interpreters often: See = what they expect to see Favor data that supports their hypothesis Ignore co= nflicting evidence This confirmation bias can turn good seismic into mislea= ding conclusions. In many cases, once a prospect is identified, the interpr= etation becomes subconsciously adjusted to support drilling rather than cha= llenge it. 6. Pressure to Drill Technical decisions are not made in a vacuu= m. Business pressures=E2=80=94deadlines, budgets, and portfolio expectation= s=E2=80=94can influence outcomes. A marginal prospect may be pushed forward= because: A company needs to book reserves A license is about to expire The= re is pressure to show activity In such cases, even high-quality seismic ca= nnot prevent a poor decision if the underlying judgment is compromised. 7. = Uncertainty Is Underestimated Every seismic interpretation carries uncertai= nty: Velocity model errors Depth conversion inaccuracies Processing artifac= ts However, these uncertainties are often under-communicated or ignored in = final decisions. What looks like a well-defined structure in time may shift= significantly in depth. Small errors can mean missing the target entirely.= Failing to quantify and communicate uncertainty is one of the main reasons= good data leads to bad outcomes. Conclusion Good seismic does not guarante= e good decisions. Seismic is a tool=E2=80=94powerful, but limited. The real= value lies in how it is used, integrated, and challenged. Better drilling = decisions require: Honest recognition of uncertainty Strong integration acr= oss disciplines Critical thinking over visual confidence A willingness to q= uestion interpretations In the end, the problem is not that seismic fails u= s. It is that we sometimes expect it to do more than it can=E2=80=94and tru= st it more than we should.
