They are also pretty good at reasoning. But t= hey still often lack something very practical at work: procedural knowledge= . The kind of knowledge that lives inside a team=E2=80=99s actual workflow = and tells the agent how work actually gets done. An AI agent may know how a= product launch usually works. But it does not know how your company runs a= product launch. It may know what a customer renewal is. But it does not kn= ow how your account team reviews renewal risk. Without that layer, an agent= usually has two options: Either someone prompts it through every step, eve= ry time. Or the agent guesses. Neither of those is what we want in real wor= k. So what is an AI agent skill? In short, an AI agent skill is a reusable = package of instructions that teaches an agent how to perform a specific tas= k. Think of it as a way to turn repeated prompting into a reusable workflow= . Instead of explaining the same process every time =E2=80=94 =E2=80=9Cuse = this template, check these fields, follow this order, apply this rule, don= =E2=80=99t do that thing=E2=80=9D =E2=80=94 you define the workflow once as= a skill. Then the agent can pull it in when the task is relevant. At a sim= ple level, a skill tells the agent: when it should be used what steps to fo= llow which rules matter what examples to copy what files, scripts, or templ= ates may be needed when to ask for human review The format can be surprisin= gly simple. In many implementations, a skill is basically a folder with a S= KILL.md file inside it. That file usually includes a small metadata section= at the top, often written in YAML, with fields like name and description. = The name identifies the skill. The description tells the agent what the ski= ll does and when to use it. That description is more important than it soun= ds, because it helps the agent decide whether this skill is relevant to the= current request. Below that metadata, the rest of the file contains the ac= tual instructions: the workflow, rules, examples, constraints, and decision= logic the agent needs to follow. The skill folder can also include support= ing resources, such as scripts the agent can run, reference documents, temp= lates, sample outputs, static assets, or configuration files. So a =E2=80= =9Ccustomer renewal review=E2=80=9D skill might include instructions for an= alyzing account health, a template for the final summary, examples of risk = signals, and a script that pulls usage data from the right place. A =E2=80= =9Csecurity review=E2=80=9D skill might include a checklist, escalation rul= es, approved risk language, and references to internal policies. The point = is not that the file format is complicated. The point is that the agent get= s a reusable way to learn how a task should be done in a specific context. = But what happens when an agent has hundreds of skills? This is where the de= sign gets more interesting. Because in a real company, this could add up qu= ickly. One skill for customer renewal reviews. Another for bug triage. Anot= her for sales call summaries. Another for security reviews, product launch = checklists, monthly reporting, hiring feedback, policy checks, support esca= lations, engineering tickets=E2=80=A6 You get the idea. If the agent tried = to load every full workflow every time it started, the context window would= get crowded before the actual task even began. So skills usually rely on a= pattern called progressive disclosure. The idea is simple: the agent does = not read everything upfront. At first, it only sees a lightweight index of = available skills. Usually, that means the skill name and description. So in= stead of loading the full renewal review process, the launch checklist, the= security review instructions, and the support triage workflow, the agent o= nly sees something like: There is a renewal review skill. There is a launch= checklist skill. There is a security review skill. There is a support tria= ge skill. Enough to know what exists. Not enough to crowd the context windo= w. That is the first layer: metadata only. Then, when the user asks for som= ething that matches one of those descriptions, the agent pulls in the full = SKILL.md. That is when the real workflow appears: the steps, the rules, the= examples, the output format, the things to check, and the things not to do= . That is the second layer: full instructions. Then, only if the task needs= more, the agent can load the supporting resources. Maybe a template. Maybe= a script. Maybe a reference document. Maybe a sample output. That is the t= hird layer: resources on demand. This is what makes skills scalable: the ag= ent starts with a map, opens the relevant workflow, and grabs extra materia= ls only when the task calls for them. And there is one important detail her= e: the routing usually depends on the model=E2=80=99s own reasoning. The mo= del looks at the user=E2=80=99s request, compares it with the available ski= ll descriptions, and decides which skill should be used. That is why the sk= ill description matters so much. It is not just a nice label for humans. It= is part of the routing layer. If the description is too vague, the agent m= ay miss the skill when it should use it. If the description is too broad, t= he agent may use it in the wrong situation. So a good skill description is = doing real work. It tells the agent: use this skill here, not everywhere. Skill= s sound similar to other parts of the AI stack, but they sit in a different= place. Let=E2=80=99s say an agent is helping your team turn a messy produc= t discussion into an engineering ticket. First, the agent needs somewhere t= o work. That is where MCP may come in. MCP can give the agent access to too= ls and systems =E2=80=94 Jira, GitHub, Google Drive, an internal database, = or whatever else the workflow depends on. So MCP answers: What can the agen= t reach? But access alone is not enough. Just because the agent can open Ji= ra does not mean it knows how your team writes a good ticket. Then the agen= t needs information. That is where RAG may come in. RAG can retrieve the pr= oduct spec, previous tickets, customer notes, or internal documentation. So= RAG answers: What does the agent need to know? But information alone is st= ill not the full workflow. The agent may have the product spec in front of = it and still miss what your team actually expects: how to separate user imp= act from implementation details, what ambiguity needs to be flagged, and wh= at format the ticket should follow. Fine-tuning is another option, but it s= olves a different problem. Fine-tuning changes the model=E2=80=99s behavior= by training it on examples. That can be useful if you want the model to in= ternalize a certain tone, format, or domain pattern. But it is heavier and = harder to update. If your ticket-writing process changes next month, you pr= obably do not want to fine-tune a model just to update one workflow. This i= s where skills sit. Skills tell the agent: How should the work be done? For= the engineering ticket example, a skill might say: Start with user impact.= Separate the problem from the proposed solution. Include acceptance criter= ia. Link the design file if available. Flag unclear requirements instead of= filling in the gaps. Do not create implementation tasks before the scope i= s confirmed. Or more simply: MCP tells the agent what it can reach. RAG tel= ls the agent what it can look up. Fine-tuning shapes how the model tends to= behave. Skills tell the agent how the task should actually be done. Not ev= erything is so bright. Skills also create a trust problem. Skills are power= ful because they can include more than instructions. They may also include = scripts, templates, files, references, and access to local resources. That = is useful, but it also means a skill is not always =E2=80=9Cjust a prompt.= =E2=80=9D If a skill can run code, access files, read environment variables= , or interact with APIs, then installing one starts to look more like insta= lling a software dependency. You need to know where it came from, what it d= oes, and what permissions it has. A badly written or malicious skill could = hide unsafe instructions, trigger the wrong tool behavior, or access data i= t should not touch. So skills need governance. Not heavy bureaucracy, but b= asic discipline: review them, version-control them, scope their permissions= , and be careful about which scripts are allowed to run automatically. Beca= use as agents become more capable, the risk is not only what the model says= . It is what the agent is allowed to do. I=E2=80=99d= start with repeatable tasks that already have a known process: renewal rev= iews, bug triage, support escalation, compliance checks, monthly reporting,= internal brief creation. A good skill usually needs five things: clear inp= ut, repeatable steps, known failure points, standard output format, and cle= ar rules for when the agent should stop and ask a human. That last point is= easy to overlook. I don=E2=80=99t think every workflow should become full = automation too early. Some tasks still need human judgment because the cont= ext is political, ambiguous, high-risk, or relationship-sensitive. So the p= ractical work is not just writing a file. It is deciding what should be sta= ndardized, what should stay flexible, what permissions the skill needs, who= reviews it, and how often it gets updated. That is where I think skills be= come useful for real organizations: they make workflow knowledge easier to = reuse, inspect, govern, and improve over time.
