Hello and Happy Spring! I= t has been a while since The Drill Down hit your inbox, but our team has be= en busy championing geothermal energy. As I reflect on our work and the new= season, I want to take a moment to highlight our path ahead and the power = of collaboration that fuels our progress. = =C2=A0

Over the past year, we=E2= =80=99ve been undergoing changes as geothermal steps even further into the = spotlight=E2=80=94creating new possibilities for the heat beneath our feet.= As many of you know, the Geothermal Technologies Office is now the Office of Geothermal (OG) and is part of a newly formed = office at the Department of Energy: The=C2=A0Hydrocarbons and = Geothermal Energy=C2=A0Office=C2=A0(HGEO). We=E2=80=99re working closely wit= h our new DOE colleagues to meet the HGEO mission to =E2=80=9Cunleash the f= ull potential of America=E2=80=99s hydrocarbon and geothermal resources to = provide affordable, reliable, and secure energy.=E2=80=9D We=E2=80=99ve sta= rted that work out of the gate, with selection announcements for our GRID initiative, which aims to quantify the v= alue of geothermal to the grid, and for our eastern U.S. enhanced geothermal systems (EGS)=C2=A0pilot=C2=A0demons= tration.=C2=A0= We=E2=80=99ve=C2=A0also released new funding opportunities for=C2=A0= EGS demonstrations = and exploration drilling,=C2=A0critical materials= from geothermal brines, and work in=C2=A0subsurface=C2=A0artificial intelligence (AI).= =C2=A0

As you can see, we are ha= rd at work on new ideas and research pathways, and we encourage you to stay= tuned for updates. $171.5 Million Announced to Expand U.S. Geothermal Energy

OG announced a funding opp= ortunity that will support next-generation geothermal field-scale tests for= electricity generation, as well as exploration drilling for characterizati= on and potential confirmation of promising next-generation and hydrothermal= prospects. OG=C2=A0Selects=C2=A0$14 Million Enhanced Geo= thermal Systems Demonstration Project=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0

The $14 milli= on project, led by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protect= ion, will leverage the significant thermal resources in the Appalachian Uti= ca Shale to assess the efficacy and scalability of EGS in the eastern Unite= d States. This project is part of OG's EGS Pil= ot Demonstrations initiative.

New Principal Investigator for Utah FORGE

The Energy &= amp; Geoscience Institute (EGI) at the University of Utah announced Dr. Kri= stie McLin=C2=A0as=C2=A0<= span class=3D"NormalTextRun SCXW265972620 BCX8" data-ccp-parastyle=3D"No Sp= acing" style=3D"line-height: 1.4;">the new Principal Investigator of the=C2= =A0Utah FORGE= =C2=A0research project.
