I stopped collecting prompts. I started training workflows. This sounds like a productivity guy sentence, and for that I apologize. Som= ewhere, a man with a cold plunge and a Notion affiliate link just felt a di= sturbance in the force. But I mean it in the least guru-ish way possible. For a while, prompts were the whole game. Save the perfect prompt. Rewrite = the prompt. Add more context. Add a role. Add constraints. Add examples. Ad= d =E2=80=9Cthink step by step=E2=80=9D like you were sprinkling paprika on = a very confused robot. Then paste the whole thing into a new chat and hope = the machine remembered how to behave. Sometimes it worked. Often it sort of worked. And =E2=80=9Csort of worked=E2=80=9D is where your afternoon goes to die. Because then you spend forty minutes editing the output back into something= usable, muttering things like =E2=80=9Cno, not like that=E2=80=9D to a lap= top while your coffee becomes whatever comes after room temperature. Spirit= ually lukewarm. Legally beverage. The problem was not that prompts were useless. The problem was that prompts were too fragile for recurring work. If I do the same kind of task every week, I do not want to re-explain my st= andards from scratch every time. I do not want to dig through a prompt bank= like an archaeologist of my own former optimism. I do not want to paste a = 900-word incantation into Claude and pray it remembers that =E2=80=9Csharp = but human=E2=80=9D does not mean =E2=80=9CLinkedIn carousel in a blazer.=E2= =80=9D I want the AI to have training. Not vibes. Training. prompts are requests. skills are jobs. Here is the simplest way I think about it: A prompt is a request. A skill is a job. A prompt says, =E2=80=9CCan you help me do this thing right now?=E2=80=9D A skill says, =E2=80=9CThis is how this job works here. These are the input= s. These are the steps. These are the standards. These are the mistakes to = avoid. These are the examples of good work. These are the things you should= never do unless a human explicitly approves them.=E2=80=9D Different relationship. Different output. Different amount of me wanting to throw my laptop gently into a decorative = pond. This is why I have become mildly evangelical about skills, agents, saved wo= rkflows, project instructions, memory systems, whatever your tool calls the= m. The naming matters less than the shift underneath. You are not trying to write the perfect prompt anymore. You are trying to train a repeatable role. That role might be small. It probably should be small. Big vague AI jobs ar= e where chaos breeds. =E2=80=9CHelp me grow my brand=E2=80=9D is not a job.= That is a cry for help wearing a content strategy hat. A better job is: - turn this newsletter into five LinkedIn post angles - review this draft against my voice and quality bar - extract usable ideas from my meeting notes - turn customer research into messaging insights - find weak claims in this landing page - summarize this week=E2=80=99s content performance and recommend one chang= e - prepare a first pass of outreach angles, but do not send anything Small jobs. Clear standards. Human review. That is where AI starts feeling less like a slot machine and more like a we= irdly competent junior teammate who still needs supervision but no longer n= eeds you to explain what a spreadsheet is every morning. Progress. the AI employee metaphor is useful, unfortunately I do my best to resist metaphors that make me sound like I am about to sell= a course from a rented kitchen. But the AI employee metaphor is annoyingly useful. Imagine hiring someone part time to help with your content. On day one, you would not say, =E2=80=9CWrite in my voice. Make it good. Be= strategic.=E2=80=9D If you did, the person would smile politely, go home, and update their Link= edIn to =E2=80=9Copen to work=E2=80=9D by dinner. You would train them. You would show them examples. You would explain the audience. You would tel= l them what good looks like. You would give them the recurring tasks. You w= ould review their first attempts. You would point out what was too generic,= too stiff, too cute, too long, too empty, too close to sounding like a fou= nder announcing a seed round from inside a meditation app. You would not expect them to become perfect because you said =E2=80=9Cact a= s a world-class content strategist.=E2=80=9D That phrase has done so much f*cking damage, man. Jail. Skills work because they treat AI less like a genius and more like a traine= d role inside a system. A newsletter editor should know your voice, your recurring bits, your banne= d phrases, your preferred structure, your title style, your ending format, = and the difference between a line that sounds like you and a line that soun= ds like a SaaS company hired a comedian for an offsite. A research assistant should know what sources matter, what counts as eviden= ce, how to separate a real signal from engagement bait, and when to say =E2= =80=9CI do not know=E2=80=9D instead of manufacturing confidence out of key= board fumes. A repurposing assistant should know that the goal is not to chop a long ess= ay into content confetti. The goal is to find the sharpest ideas and reshap= e them for the place they are going. A growth assistant should know the difference between reach and relevance. A brand assistant should know what you refuse. This is where the advantage is. Not one magic assistant. A small team of trained helpers doing narrow jobs against your standards. I know. We are dangerously close to saying =E2=80=9Ctiny weird teams=E2=80= =9D again. I will behave. Mostly. build the skill after you do the work There are a few ways to create these workflows. You can write the whole instruction set up front. You can download someone else=E2=80=99s. You can ask AI to generate a skill from a prompt you already use. All of that can work. But my favorite method is still the least glamorous one=E2=80=A6 do the wor= k once, then turn the process into a skill. This is the difference between writing down a recipe from memory and cookin= g the dish while someone watches. If you write the recipe from memory, you will forget all the tiny decisions= that make it work. The heat level. The order. The moment you stop stirring= =2E The fact that =E2=80=9Ca little sal= t=E2=80=9D means one thing to you and=20= a full legal event to someone else. If you cook the dish together, the hidden process becomes visible. Same thing with AI. Do the workflow manually with the model first. Iterate. Correct it. Tell it= what missed. Tell it what worked. Show it examples. Get to an output you w= ould actually use. Then ask: We just worked through this workflow. Turn the process into a reu= sable skill. Pull out the principles, inputs, steps, quality checks, and co= mmon mistakes. Make it adaptable, not rigid, unless the task needs to run t= he exact same way every time. That last part matters. Some workflows should be rigid. Meeting summaries, data reports, inbox tria= ge, file naming, weekly status updates. Great. Give me the template. Make i= t consistent. Let my future self not think. But creative workflows need principles more than choreography. If your carousel skill produces the same structure every time, congratulati= ons, you have automated becoming boring. If your newsletter editor turns ev= ery piece into the same arc, you have built a very efficient little machine= for sanding off your own fingerprints. A good creative skill should know the standards without freezing the shape. The shape is allowed to change. The point is not. what I would build first If you are building your own AI operating system, do not start with somethi= ng massive. Do not build =E2=80=9Cmy entire life agent.=E2=80=9D That way lies madness, calendar permissions, and eventually a very sincere = apology email to someone named Greg. (yes, that may be coming from a real l= ife experience=E2=80=A6 i=E2=80=99m still sorry Greg, hope your mom is doin= g well). Start with the repeated work you already do. The stuff that happens every week. The stuff you know how to do but hate restarting. The stuff where you keep giving AI the same corrections. That is where a skill belongs. If I were starting from scratch, I would build five. 1. the voice and taste reviewer This skill reads a draft and asks: does this sound like me, does it have a = real point, and where does it smell like AI? Not just grammar. Grammar is the floor. I want a reviewer that catches the = lines that are polished but dead. The metaphors that are too familiar. The = argument that has no enemy. The paragraph that sounds like it was grown in = a lab for =E2=80=9Cfounder thought leadership.=E2=80=9D Inputs: - the draft - a few strong examples of your writing - your banned phrases - your preferred rhythm - the audience - what the piece is trying to do Outputs: - what works - what feels generic - where the argument gets soft - lines to cut - stronger title ideas - a revised version only after the critique This is the one I would build first because AI makes okay writing cheap, wh= ich means your quality bar has to get meaner. Lovingly mean. Like a friend who tells you the jacket is not working before you leave the = apartment. 2. the idea capture processor Most good content does not begin as content. It begins as a voice memo while walking. A Slack rant. A note you wrote at = 11:43 p.m. that says =E2=80=9Ccontent =3D proof??=E2=80=9D with no further = explanation, because apparently past you was busy being mysterious. This skill turns raw scraps into usable material. It should extract: - the core idea - why it matters - who it is for - what it connects to - possible titles - possible examples - what still needs proof - whether it is a post, essay, product idea, sales angle, or private note The goal is not to publish faster. The goal is to lose fewer good thoughts. Very different. Very adult. Disgusting, but useful. 3. the repurposing strategist Repurposing is one of those words that sounds easy until you do it badly. Bad repurposing is copy-paste with a haircut. Good repurposing understands the new format. A Substack essay is not a LinkedIn post with a fancy gym membership. A Link= edIn post is not a chopped-up newsletter section. A short video is not a pa= ragraph read aloud while your eyes scream for help. Each platform has a different job. So the skill should not say, =E2=80=9Cturn this into ten posts.=E2=80=9D It should ask: - what is the strongest idea in this piece? - what would stand alone without context? - what would make someone argue, save, share, or reply? - what should stay long-form because compressing it kills the nuance? - what is the best hook for this specific platform? The output should be a set of angles, not just derivatives. Less content recycling. More content choreography. I regret that phrase slightly, but not enough to delete it. Onward. 4. the weekly learning loop This is the boring one that makes everything else better. Once a week, the skill reviews what you published, what performed, what got= replies, what felt most like you, what felt off, what took too long, and w= hat should change next week. Most creators and marketers skip this because it feels like homework. Also = because looking at performance data can feel like inviting a tiny board of = strangers to evaluate your soul while eating grapes. But without a learning loop, you are just performing into the void and hopi= ng the void has taste. The skill should produce: - what worked - what did not - why it may have worked - what to repeat - what to stop doing - one experiment for next week - one update to your voice/content system Tiny loop. Big compounding. Annoyingly effective. You=E2=80=99ll thank me. 5. the proof and claim checker This one matters more than people think. AI makes it easy to say things with confidence. Too easy. A proof checker reviews a draft and asks: what claims are we making, which = ones are supported, which ones need a source, which ones are too vague, and= which ones should be softened or cut? For company content, this is not optional. For personal writing, it is still useful because your reputation is not a s= andbox environment. Inputs: - the draft - approved proof points - source links - claims you are allowed to make - claims that require confirmation Outputs: - supported claims - unsupported claims - suggested proof - safer wording - confidence level This skill is not sexy. Neither is brushing your teeth. Still highly recommend. the workflow is the product The more I build with AI, the more I think the actual product is not the mo= del. The model matters. Obviously. Better models are better. I am not sitting he= re pretending intelligence is irrelevant like a man trying to be contrarian= at a dinner party nobody invited him to (or the inbox of somebody who can= =E2=80=99t remember why they subscribed, Hi =F0=9F=91=8B). But the model is only part of the system. The workflow is where the value lives. The context. The memory. The reference materials. The quality bar. The review points. The human decisions. The feedback loop. The small trained jobs that make the big messy work possible. This is true for creators. It is true for operators. It is true for marketi= ng teams. It is especially true for companies trying to use AI without turn= ing their brand into a content smoothie. The bigger idea is an AI content engine that understands the strategy, = the brand, the proof, the workflow, the publishing system, and the learning= loop. Not a prompt. A machine around the work. And not a machine that replaces taste. A machine that makes taste easier to apply repeatedly without needing every= Tuesday to become a dramatic act of creative heroism. the point is not to have more AI. the point is to have less restart. This is the thing I would tell anyone trying to use AI better=E2=80=A6 Stop optimizing for clever prompts. Optimize for less restart. Every time you explain the same context again, that is a system leak. Every time you give the same correction again, that is a training opportuni= ty. Every time you manually rebuild the same workflow, that is a skill waiting = to exist. Every time the output is technically fine but not yours, that is a standard= you have not encoded yet. The goal is not to remove yourself from the work. Please do not remove yourself from the work. That is how we get the internet equivalent of unseasoned chicken wearing Al= lbirds. I don=E2=80=99t even know at this point=E2=80=A6 felt right. The goal is to remove the repetitive setup around the work so the human par= t has more energy. More energy for taste. More energy for strategy. More energy for the decision that this line is almost right but not alive. More energy for the thing only you can actually do. This is why skills matter. Not because they are a cute feature. Not because they make AI feel more futuristic. Because they turn =E2=80=9CAI help=E2=80=9D from a series of disconnected c= hats into a trained operating system around how you actually work. That is the shift. Prompts are disposable. Skills compound. And if you are using AI every week for the same kind of work, the question = is not whether you need a better prompt. The question is whether you have been accidentally training an employee in = your head while making the same corrections over and over like a sleep-depr= ived middle manager in a Patagonia vest. Somewhere, a man with a cold plunge and a Notion affiliate link just = felt a disturbance in the force.</p><p style=3D"margin: 0 0 20px 0;color: r= gb(54,55,55);line-height: 26px;font-size: 16px;">But I mean it in the least= guru-ish way possible.</p><p style=3D"margin: 0 0 20px 0;color: rgb(54,55,= 55);line-height: 26px;font-size: 16px;">For a while, prompts were the whole= game. Save the perfect prompt. Rewrite the prompt. Add more context. Add a= role. Add constraints. Add examples. Add “think step by step” = like you were sprinkling paprika on a very confused robot.
